by Kimberly Stuart, addresses the dilemma many women and men make, choosing one’s career or a relationship. Charlie is a pastry chef trying to establish herself in a famous NY restaurant under the tutelage of a famous baker, but no matter how hard she tries, she is not able to get the approval of her superior. When the opportunity arises for her to run the kitchen in an ex’s restaurant, she takes him up on it. Just as she starts the new job, two life-changing circumstances occur in her life. First, she meets someone who has the potential to be a lifelong partner, Kai. Second, at the restaurant where she works, a reality show is going to be filmed, and she is expected to be part of it.
Along the way, Charlie discovers she likes some of the perks of being part of the reality show, the fame and the chance to hobnob with the rich and famous. It gives her an ego boost that she had been missing when working at the original restaurant. At the same time, she begins dating Kai and seeing how people live when not consumed by work. All comes to a head once the television show airs, and Charlie is forced to face the reality her life has become.
If you are interested in romance, food, and real life dilemmas couched in some fluff and fun, then Sugarmay be for you. Though no recipes are included, something Stuart ought to consider if she continues to write food related books, the desserts are described in mouth watering detail. I love chocolate and definitely wanted to try some of Charlie’s confections. The story manages to tie up many loose ends, while also setting itself up for a sequel or a sister story with some of the characters. It is mostly a light read that also contains aspects to make a person pause and think.
